Blepharoplasty – Eyelid Sagging & Bags Removal Surgery

Blepharoplasty- Eyelid Sagging & Bags Removal Surgery

Blepharoplasty is a cosmetic surgical procedure which is done to correct defects, deformities and disfigurement of the eyelids. It is done for both medical and aesthetic reasons. The procedure can correct the problems by excision and removal of excess tissues, repositioning of fat and reinforcement of eye muscles etc.

In a social setup, when people look at each other, they look firstly at someone’s eyes. Even a negligible difference of 1 mm in the height of upper and lower eyelid, can cause the facial features to look asymmetrical and unappealing. There the cosmetic aspect of eyelid surgery cannot be neglected. Therefore, before choosing a surgeon for the procedure, ensure that he/she understands the fine technicalities of eyelid surgery such as ptosis surgery and blepharoplasty.

Fat or fluid in the under-eye area?

It is very important to correctly determine the cause of the bags in the under eye area. . The bags can be due to fat or fluid accumulation. Fat deposits are treated by blepharoplasty eyelid surgery, but the same procedure cannot be used to treat fluid accumulation as it can worsen the case. For fluid accumulation in the under eye area the carbon di oxide laser skin resurfacing is done.

Blepharoplasty surgery

This procedure improves the appearance of the eyes by correcting the problem in upper, lower or both the eyelids. The face appears more alert and rested.

The surgery can remove fat deposits in the upper eyelids that cause puffiness. Eyelid lift surgery can be performed by recontouring the loose or sagging skin that creates the folds. Lower eyelid surgery can cure excess skin and wrinkles from the lower eyelid. The droopiness of the eyes can also be corrected and in some cases the treatment of the sagging skin can also cure/treat the dark circles from the under-eye area.

The surgery can be performed through the conjunctival part of the eyelid or through the eyelid skin. When the surgery is performed through the eyelid skin the scar is hidden inside the eye lid fold and if it is performed though the trans conjunctival part it is invisible. Sometimes, eyelid surgery can be combined with ptosis surgery to raise the eyelids.

A double eyelid surgery or an Asian Blepharoplasty surgery is a procedure used to create an epicanthic fold in the upper eyelid. This fold is known as supratarsal epicanthic fold and the surgery is very common in the people of China, Japan, Singapore and some parts of North-East India like Meghalaya, Sikkim, Mizoram etc.

Blepharoplasty is a special procedure and it requires the surgeon to specialize in oculplasty as well as plastic surgery. Such surgeons are trained to treat the functional as well the cosmetic aspects of the diseases of the eyelid. Therefore when going for a surgery choose a surgeon who specializes in Oculoplastic surgery and the surgery of eyelids, orbit and the tear drain system.
