We all have often heard of a cosmetic procedure known as face-lift. The medical term for facelift is Rhytidectomy which is derived from the Greek words rhytis and ektome which together mean surgery for wrinkles.

The procedure of facelift is an amalgamation of different surgical procedures and is done on a patient to reduce the appearance of wrinkles and give the face a younger looking appearance. In this procedure the extra sagging skin on the face is removed and the stretched skin is again used to cover the patient’s neck and face. This tightens the tissues under skin surface so the face appears to be younger.  It is one of the most popular anti-aging treatments and other anti-aging procedures such as blepharoplasty may be done in combination with face-lift. All the procedures are performed under general anesthesia.

As a person ages, various factors affect the skin and the fullness of the face which gives a youthful appearance decreases. The effect of aging is most pronounced on the mid-face area which includes the lower eyelids and the laugh lines which are present from the nose to the corner of the mouth. As we age, the mid face area droops and gives an older look. A mid face lift can re-contour the facial aspects that are the markers of youth and make a person look much younger. A mid face lift is an ideal procedure where the sagging in the neck is relatively less. In such cases, only a mid face lift is sufficient. A full face lift is not required for people who are in their 40s. In this age the skin still has some laxity and the procedure can be limited to only mid face.

The mid face lift can be performed with minimal scars as the incisions can be made inside the mouth and along the hairline. The fat tissues are lifted and repositioned to perform the procedure. One other method to perform the surgery is by making a trans-conjunctival incision. In this case the incision is made from inside the eyelid which is similar to the procedure known as blepharoplasty in which the bags of the eyelids are removed. As the incision is hidden and is not visible on the face the surgery is considered to be scar less. With this procedure, the cheekbones can also be “lifted”. The cheekbones can be made to look more rounder and hence younger. Since the incision is made from inside the eyelid, it can also be combined with eyelid puffiness removal surgery, also known as blepharoplasty.

There are many advantages to a mid-face lift. As the surgery practically leaves no scars, the results are more aesthetically appealing. The healing time is shorter and the results are astonishing. A mid-face lift can take years off a person’s face and reduce the visibility of wrinkles considerably.
