Orthognathic Surgery

What to expect from a Reliable Orthognathic Surgery?

Beauty gets defined in all new ways now and it is all because of the advancements in cosmetic science and easy accessibility to plastic surgical processes. Men and women are now so finicky about their looks that they can’t compromise on their facial symmetry and want the structure corrected under any circumstance. This viewpoint prompts the need for studying the different facial shapes how different people are identified based upon them:

  • People are said to possess a round shaped face when their jaw-line, cheekbones and temples are rounded and identically measured, with balanced length and width of face.
  • People have a heart shaped face when their temples at the top get conical towards the chin when looked downwards, giving the feel of an inverted triangle.
  • If the temples and jaw-line is slim and cheekbones wide, the face is understood as diamond shaped.
  • Constricted jaw, eye-line and temples indicate triangle shaped face.
  • A face in which its width is triple that of its length, it is called an Oblong Face.
  • A face in which its face’s length is 1.5 times its width, it is called an Oval Face.
  • When the jaw-line and cheekbone dimensions are same, facial skin and temples are equally long and broad, and facial traits are angled and sharp, face is square shaped.

Oval is a beauty identifier in women for the balance it creates with feminine stature; men’s handsome face gets best exposed when it is square shaped. However, all of us know that beauty or handsomeness was never so significant if all men and women were born with identical faces. We hail from different genetics and so our individualities are different.

Orthognathic surgery has long helped people to get their facial structure and jaw altered as per their wish. In this surgery, a wide range of conditions get cured and requirements get fulfilled. Some of these are:

  • Sleep apnea
  • Malocclusion issues or its other associated problems
  • Temporo Mandibular Joint or TMJ mess

However, overtime, the usage and applicability of Orthognathic surgeries has remarkably exceeded as it is not just limited to the conventional outcomes, but also for improving aesthetic properties, acquiring facial equilibrium or enhancing the smile, over, under and cross bite, lacking chin, gaining full stretched and attractive smile, and a lot more!

The extensive application of Orthognathic can be seen in following forms:

  • Chin Repositioning or Surgery as Genioplasty: This is the surgery variant in which severe medical conditions such as chin misalignment, recession or extortionate condition can be treated. The doctor can incorporate chin implants in special cases of feeble or thinning chin. Consequently, chin looks get improvised and better facial balance achieved. The specialist may want to reposition the patient’s chin when it is uneven or excessive. For this purpose, he may incise the implant underneath the chin’s lower part or below lip. Rhinoplasty procedures can be blended with Genioplasty for optimizing results such as for neck reduction.
  • Blood Transfusion and Bone Graft through Bimaxillary osteotomy: This is an intricate process needing specialist hands and at least 24 Hour monitoring. In this, experts use bone graft material which they take out from the lower portion of jaw or from chin. They pay special care to check that union across bone cut is done appropriately and maxilla bone gets treated in time. When done by experienced surgeon, the procedure can produce incredible outcome in the form of improvised facial aesthetics.
  • Le Fort Type 1 and 3: Le Fort Type 1 is associated with structure correction and alignment of upper jaw. The process involves removal and insertion of patient’s upper jaw, also known as maxilla. The reinsertion is done at the new position with the help of titanium screws and plates. Maxilla movements are extensively possible in Le fort type 1 – whether the patient needs it forward, downward, upward or in some special cases backward.

Le Fort Type 3 is associated with structure correction and relocation of mid-face. The process involves incision near lips, ear and lower eyelids to make corrective positioning in cheeks, nose and jaws. With this procedure, it is possible to raise the scalp and to separate sensory nerves towards bony canals and forehead. In some special cases, surgeon can employ it for suction drain, bone grafting and blood transfusion.

  • When a correction is needed in the lower jaw or mandible, Orthognathic procedure can be sought. Sagittal split osteotomy is done in this process to correct the under and overbite and the process involves cutting of lower jaw to rip off it forward or backward as needed.
